mattie starts for connacht

Matthew Mellotte to Start for Connacht this Friday
September 5, 2013
Our Own NUIM Scholar and U20 and Premier A player Matthew Mellotte will line out for Connacht U20′s this Friday night in Donnybrook against Leinster.
Many Memebers will know Matthew and will have seen him line out for our Premier U21 side last season as they went on to claim the JP Flanagan Premier league or with the Premier side who won promotion to the A.I.L. Div 2a
Matthew started playing rugby at the age of four with Westport rfc with his dad as his coach. His secondary school was Cistercian College Roscrea a rugby boarding school in Co. Tipperary which enabled him to play rugby on an almost daily basis. AS Matthew Said “if I had to pick idols I would have two, the obvious Brian O Driscoll and Carlos Spencer”.
He joined NUIM Barnhall last year when he came to NUI Maynooth as part of the rugby scholarship programme that was offered. We asked Matthew what it was like in NUIM, he said ”The club works well with the college and offers a great rugby environment for students”. Matthew has played with Connacht since he was 15 in their underage programme and has progressed all the way up to under 20′s. He started training this year at the start of July and had an 8 week programme throughout the summer where they trained in Galway three days a week with personalised sessions for two other days . We also asked Matthew about his time in NUIM Barnhall RFC and he responded that “Since my time as Blue Bull, I have had a lot of coaches and the staff at NUIM Barnhall and NUI Maynooth are definitely among the best I have had the pleasure of working with and that is evident from last year’s successes with David Kirk and Nathan Lawless being my u21′s coaches and Dennis Bowes and Eoin Hogan being the senior coaches “.
We wish Matthew every success with Connacht on Friday and throughout the coming season with the Blue Bulls.

NuimBarnhall Gathering

It's Coming

Press Release

NUIM Barnhall to showcase History, Hospitality and Friendship in August Gathering

Leixlip Legend Trevor Brennan will be back in town to lead the celebrations at NUIM Barnhall’s Gathering weekend on the 9th 10th and 11th of August.

The local man, a former Irish Rugby International and two-time Heineken Cup winner with ASM Toulouse, was a product of the Club’s mini rugby set up and returns as guest of honour for a series of events that will see over 1000 people converge on the Parsonstown club.

“I’ve always been proud of my roots, proud of my Community and proud of my Club and I was delighted to get involved in what will be the biggest event in the clubs 43-year History,” explained Brennan. “The Gathering was billed internationally as a way of showing how the Irish can welcome their guests and put on a party. My town and my club have always been brilliant at that and I’m looking forward to being involved and making sure everyone has a weekend to remember.  I’ll be bringing some of my Toulouse team-mates to show them what Irish hospitality is all about.”

The celebrations begin on Friday August 10th at 8pm when all are welcome to the unveiling of NUIM Barnhall’s Trip Down Memory Lane in the Clubhouse.  To mark the occasion, the three trophies won by Leinster Rugby this season, the Rabo Direct Pro 12 trophy, the Amlin Challenge Cup and the British and Irish Cup, will be on display and available for fan photographs.

The festivities continue over the course of Saturday the 11th of August, with a Family Fun Day and Tag Rugby tournament expected to attract hundreds to the same venue for Children’s activities and a top quality competition.  Proceedings get under way at 11am. Some of Brennan’s former Toulouse and Leinster team-mates are expected to take the field.

Over 500 guests are expected at a Gala dinner at the Club on Saturday, before the party finishes on Sunday, August 12th with a session of traditional Irish music, dance and craic at the club from 2pm.
