NUI Maynooth Rugby’s newest and biggest fan Leo the Lion was on hand on the University Open day to give out free hugs and make sure prospective students made the right choice by selecting Maynooth to further their education..

When Leo isn’t working hard for Leinster he likes to sit back in his Maynooth Killer Bees jersey and relax…

Cheers Leo….

NUIM Vs UUC Coleraine

On the 23rd of November NUIM freshers played against away in UUC Coleraine. It took four hours up so we were all very tired and we were given 15 minutes to warm up. For a team that just got of a bus and had a very quick warm up we had a great start. Great pressure was put on them from the restart from Adam Wheatly and Greg Daly. We kept them pinned back in there 22. They couldn’t get clean ball as Chris Devaney was putting pressure at line out time. We got quick ball from a turn over and shipped out to John Condren who run a brilliant line and went under the posts for the first try and which Dave Carey converted. From the restart we kept the pressure on  and where always very threatening on the ball but some decision which didn’t go our way and some handing errors which let us down. However we kept the pressure on and Mikey Maher got the second try and again Dave Carey converted. It ended 14-0 at half time to Nuim. The second half started and just one lack of concentration and UUC scored under the posts and they converted. Full credit to the lads they didn’t drop their heads we all wanted a win and we didn’t travel all that way to lose. We got a penalty and Dave Carey put it into touch in-between their 10 and half way line. The pack fronted up and with a clean catch from Greg Daly and a perfect throw from David Barnes we took it down and mauled it 45 meters and the try was taken by Chris Devaney and again Dave Carey got the conversion. We sealed it with a great passage of play lovely hands and brilliant ball retention which allowed Dave Carey to dive in for the try however he didn’t convert as it was on the touchline. It was a very good performance and we won 26-7.

NUIM Ladies are Undefeated

Today the NUIM Ladies team had our first official outing with a blitz held by D.I.T. On arrival, we were informed that we’d be playing tag rugby, instead of full contact, which didn’t impress our girls, except for Tag herself. However, Podge & Duffo managed to convince them to have a few full contact games as well as the tag.

We started well in our first game, against Coleraine, with Tag scoring a try in the 2nd minute & the tries flooded in after that, along with a few hits the Tuilagi brothers would be proud of. One player, who won’t be named, even managed to take down not only an opposing player, but also a few spectators in the process! The game finished as it started, with Maynooth winning on a scoreline of 8 tries to 1. Try-scorers were: Tag (Niamh), Orlaith, Dooley, Claudia & Aine.

After our first triumph, it was time for a game of tag rugby against D.I.T, which drew some moans & groans from certain players, but again ended in a win for Maynooth, with the winning try coming from Aine O’ Connor, who EVENTUALLY found the try line (third time lucky!)

The Aftermath

Our third game was again against D.I.T, however it was full contact this time. We didn’t start off well, conceding a try in the first few minutes, but we bounced back with a lovely try from Tag! The game finished 3 tries apiece, with all tries coming from Tag.

We also had our first serious injuries, with both Claudia & Sylvia receiving bad knocks, but both girls will be grandddd. FEW CANS LADS!

Sylvia’s beautiful leg injury aka “The Leg Embryo”

The day was a great success overall as we FINALLY managed to convert Tag, who now OFFICIALLY prefers full contact & NUIM Ladies are undefeated. I shall now finish with a quote from El Presidente Dooley herself  ……

“SUCK ITTTTTTT”

NUIM vs Athlone I.T

On Wednesday the 9thof November the fresher’s team played Athlone away in Dubarry Park. We knew it was going to be a tough game away .it was a great start to the game we were camped on their line for the opening ten minutes. They couldn’t hold us out and our pack drove them over from a maul leading to the first try of the game. Dave Carey got the conversion.  We played the remainder of the half in Athlone’s 22. Dave Carey stood up again and slotted another penalty.   We went into half time 10- 0 up. Athlone came out strong in the 2nd half. We let them in for a soft try which they converted. We scored a second try by great hands from the backs to score in the corner. Dave Carey slotted the kick again which rounded his solid kicking display yet again.  Then we started conceding penalty after penalty which Athlone capitalised on and we found ourselves only up by one point with ten minutes to go. We held out for the remainder and was a great result for the team. We couldn’t have won without the new lads on the team from the university who all had great games. It finished NUIM 17-Athlone I.T -16.
